The Sultanabad region of Central Persia was at the forefront of the Persian carpet weaving revival in the last quarter of the 19th century. As well as the local entrepreneurs, foreign dealers like Ziegler and Co. set up carpet making projects to produce carpets in the designs, colours and sizes that suited their markets. This sumptuous carpet was woven in the early period of the revival. Largescale ornamentation and rich colouring very much in vogue in Victorian England and elsewhere in Europe and the United States. The dark terracotta field is decorated with palmettes and leaves joined by meandering vines, while the sapphire blue border continues the floral theme with rosettes and palmettes framed by acanthus leaves. It is a very dramatic, yet elegant, composition. Until recently, this carpet had been in an important Swiss residence near Zurich for generations and had been looked after very well.
