19th century
Description

An exquisite and finely moulded Famille Rose porcelain snuff bottle, dating to the late Qing Dynasty (19th Century). This charming figural piece depicts a playful boy—an auspicious symbol of the continuation of the family line—embracing a large Double Gourd (hulu).

The bottle is vibrantly decorated in a traditional palette of opaque overglaze enamels. The boy’s turquoise-blue jacket is detailed with delicate C-scroll patterns, and his rose-pink trousers feature floral motifs, characteristic of the fine craftsmanship of the period.

Symbolism & Details:

The Double Gourd: A potent symbol of fertility, longevity, and protection.

The Ribbon: Tied around the gourd, it creates a visual pun for "ten thousand generations of sons."

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating during the Qing Dynasty, Famille Rose porcelain incorporates opaque enamel colours introduced through trade, which imperial and local artisans utilised to decorate detailed figural and symbolic snuff containers.

These bottles were crafted using high-fired porcelain clay, hand-painted with vitreous enamels, and finished with stoppers made from semiprecious stones such as jade, coral, or quartz.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-applied enamels with slight surface variations, soft glaze reflectivity, appropriate base wear, and traditional decorative motifs such as double gourds or figures.

Display the bottle on a glass shelf, inside a lit curio cabinet, or atop a stack of art books on a sideboard to add subtle historical texture to a room.

Dust the surface lightly with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, keeping the bottle away from direct moisture and chemical solvents that could damage delicate enamels.
