North Indian (bundelkhand) Toradar Matchlock Gun With Extensive Bone & Brass Inlay – 122cm Barrel.
late 18th, Early 19th Century.
£1,550 $2,095 €1,784
Rare & increasingly scarce early 19th century North Indian toradar (matchlock gun), attributed to the Bundelkhand region, retaining its impressive full-length 122cm barrel and measuring approximately 171cm overall.
Examples combining this scale, decorative completeness and untouched condition are now seldom encountered on the open market.
The long forged iron barrel is of elegant tapering form and secured in the traditional manner with leather bindings. It retains an even, unpolished age patina throughout. The original matchlock mechanism remains complete and unaltered, including the serpentine arm and integral pan with pivoting cover — features frequently missing or replaced on surviving examples.
The hardwood stock is richly ornamented in the characteristic Bundelkhand style with extensive hand-cut bone inlay arranged in cross and dot motifs, framed within shaped brass side panels and borders. The execution is confident and well-balanced, producing a striking contrast betwee...n the dark aged timber, pale bone and warm brass.
The butt retains its tall angular comb and original fluted iron butt cap. Importantly, the piece shows no evidence of modern restoration, embellishment or reconstruction. The decoration, barrel and lock are consistent and original.
While North Indian toradars survive in varying states, examples retaining:
• Their full long barrel
• Complete and functioning matchlock mechanism
• Extensive original bone and brass ornament
• Strong regional character
• Honest untouched surface
are increasingly uncommon in this condition.
This is a commanding and highly decorative example of early 19th century Central Indian arms craftsmanship — suitable for advanced collectors of Eastern arms and armour, as well as for significant period interior display.
Condition
Good, honest condition throughout. The barrel retains an even age patina and is secured by later leather bands, fitted in the traditional manner and consistent with period maintenance. The matchlock mechanism is complete, with expected surface oxidation. The stock is stable, showing minor age wear, old cracks and small losses/shrinkage to the bone inlay typical of its age. Brass mounts and iron butt cap retain good colour.
Overall length: approx. 171cm
Barrel length: approx. 122cm
