Jaf Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

Kurdish rugs are among my favourite pieces. They are often bold in design and generally have great colours. One of my first purchases was a very good Jaf rug which I soon sold to a well known collector and Kurdish rug expert. This rug is a little restricted in palette compared to some and so I date it later than the other examples I have owned. That said it is a striking design and typical of Jaf rugs with the large reciprocally hooked hexagons separated by panels containing smaller hexagons. The white border balances the dark field and frames the picture. It contains offset knotting, typical of Jaf weaving where the diagonals are drawn more cleanly by vertically adjacent knots sharing one warp. It might be the sort of detail that only gets a rug enthusiast excited but it is worth noting. I do think it is a rug that needs the right setting, it cries out for a wooden floor and enough space to accommodate it’s powerful design.

The pile is generally low especially on the corroded brown wool, it is also quite thin and would require underlay. However despite this it is strong in construction and has many years of life left in it.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Jaf Kurdish rugs are traditional textiles woven by the nomadic Jaf tribe, recognized for their distinctive repeating geometric hexagonal medallions, diamond lattice designs, and deep dye palettes.

These rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile constructed onto a natural wool foundation, often incorporating vegetable-dyed yarns for saturated, long-lasting colours.

Authentic hand-knotted rugs display natural abrash colour variations, slight symmetry irregularities, hand-bound selvedges, and visible weave texture on the underside that mirrors the top pattern.

Geometric tribal rugs serve as structural anchors when placed over polished timber floors in modern minimalist interiors or layered alongside leather and dark wood furnishings.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating brush bar, turn the rug periodically to distribute wear evenly, and address liquid spills promptly using cold water and clean cloth blotting.
