Description

A superior George III period toilet, or dressing, mirror of generous proportions. Well constructed in mahogany with cross banding in walnut. Decorated throughout with profuse inlay in satinwood, boxwood and walnut. With a shield shaped mirror complete with its original beveled plate glass. The base is of bow fronted form with a series of 3 jewellery drawers. Offered for sale in very good condition.

A Georgian toilet mirror, also referred to as a dressing table or swing mirror, is a small freestanding mirror created in the 18th or early 19th century designed to sit on a chest of drawers or table for personal grooming.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or satinwood, featuring marquetry inlays, brass fittings, and hand-blown glass mirror plates.

Authentic Georgian toilet mirrors feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer bases, original brass or wooden tension turn-screws on the frame pivots, and natural oxidisation on the glass mirror back.
