Antique French Edouard Drouot Bronze Statue Sculpture 'Le Bretteur' Musketeer

19th century
Description

A cast patinated bronze figure signed by the French sculptor Édouard Drouot (1859-1945), titled "Le Bretteur". The sculpture depicts a male figure in 17th-century style clothing, including a large brimmed hat, a collared tunic, flowing breeches, and spurred boots. He stands in a dynamic pose with his left hand resting on his hip and his right hand holding a sheathed sword at his side. A strap is draped diagonally across his chest. The figure is mounted on an integral circular bronze base which is signed "Drouot". Affixed to the front of this base is a rectangular plaque inscribed with the title "LE BRETTEUR" and "XIVE SIÈCLE".

The sculpture features a varied brown patina with lighter reddish-brown tones across the high points of the drapery and musculature, suggesting natural wear. The casting details are highly defined, including the folds of the clothing, the facial features, and the decorative elements of the sword hilt and spurs. The figure is mounted on an additional, separate ebonized wood base with a stepped edge.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French bronzes are defined by romantic historical subjects, detailed figure modeling, and fine patination techniques popularised by artists exhibiting at the Paris Salon.

These sculptures were traditionally cast in bronze using either the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting method, followed by hand-chasing and chemical patination.

Authentic pieces generally feature crisp surface detail from hand-finishing, an artist signature cast into the base, foundry stamps, and natural patina wear consistent with age.

A dark bronze statue creates a focal point when placed on a timber mantelpiece, a executive desk, or within a curated bookcase alongside leather-bound volumes.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft brush or microfibre cloth and occasionally apply a thin layer of clear microcrystalline wax to protect the patinated surface from moisture.
