Victorian Gothic Revival Buffet Server Side Table

A stunning period server buffet.

This is an imposing and exceptionally well-carved side table in solid English oak, dating to the late 19th century (C1900). A fine example of the Renaissance Gothic Revival style, it features deep-relief Flemish-style carvings across the back gallery and tabletop border. The hand-work is notably crisp, depicting scrolling acanthus leaves and the traditional "Green Man" masks at the corners and centre - an iconic motif of the period that gives the piece a real sense of character.

The table is fitted with a single, wide frieze drawer featuring a bold, gadrooned front and its original brass pull-dropper handle. The construction is exactly what you want to see in quality Victorian cabinetmaking, with the drawer revealing fine hand-cut dovetail joints and solid Oak linings. It stands on four square slightly tapering legs with simple channeled detailing and scratch moulding which provides a sturdy, base that balances the highly decorative top.

We have thoroughly checked this piece over in our workshop, giving it a light clean and a traditional beeswax finish to nourish the timber. Crucially, we have preserved the original polish, which has mellowed over the last 120 years into a deep, rich colour with a wealth of genuine patina. Structurally, it is rock-solid with no loose joints or wobbles. Whether used as a striking hallway console, a compact writing desk, or a lamp table, it is a robust and decorative piece of English furniture ready for the home.

Please note this item is in superb condition for its age but will have the odd blemish here and there, however, we feel that adds to the charm and heritage of the item with it being antique.
