Description

This is a very good quality early 18th Century Staffordshire pearlware 'Fair Hebe' jug.

c 1710

Moulded with a man handing a woman a bird's nest, at the base of a tree trunk. The reverse with a sleeping hound.

It is painted with overglaze enamels, and it has indistinct impressed number to base, perhaps 36.

The jug is generally in good condition, for an item 300 years old, but there is a small rim chip, small surface chips beside the lady and to man's back. Minor paint loss.

FAQs

Designed in the late 18th century, predominantly attributed to the modeller John Voyez around 1788, the Fair Hebe jug features rustic relief carving depicting figures beside a tree trunk. It became a widely copied and seminal design produced by various Staffordshire potteries during the Georgian period.

Pearlware jugs were made from refined white earthenware body mixtures containing flint and china clay. They were decorated with high-temperature underglaze oxide colours, such as cobalt blue, antimony yellow, and copper green, and finished with a clear lead glaze tinted with cobalt to neutralise yellow tones.

Authentic pearlware displays a blue-tinted pool of glaze in deep crevices, join marks, and foot rims. Period pieces feature hand-painted underglaze colours, lightweight earthenware bodies, minor glaze crazing, and occasionally incised signatures or dates near the base.

High-end designers display relief-moulded ceramics as focal decorative objects on mantelpieces, dresser shelves, or within glass display cabinets. Pairing classical earthenware with neutral backgrounds allows the polychrome glazes and sculptural contours to stand out.

Clean earthenware gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or an artist brush to remove dust. Avoid submerging early ceramics in water or using abrasive chemicals, as moisture can penetrate glazed crazing lines or damage historic restoration work.
