Extremely Large Exhibition Quality Antique Victorian Carved Mahogany Mirror Back Console Table

19th century
Description

This is an important example of British furniture and history having a large mirror plate placed within a quality acanthus carved and scrolled frame. It is surmounted by a decorative plume depicting Britannia with her lion, an oval shipping scene, the Irish harp and the Scottish thistle to each side. This is an exhibition quality piece produced in the early stages of Queen Victoria’s reign and foreshadows the growth of her Empire and her eventual title, the Empress of India. Victoria inherited a nation that was culturally mesmerised by its naval power and sprawling Empire. This piece showcases this national pride of Britain’s international pursuits and places it firmly in the hands of the British people by also celebrating exquisite British craftsmanship. Farming tools are carved on the base of the mirror frame above a fantastic serpentine shaped top with a double moulded edge. The frieze is carved with Masonic symbols and a courthouse; these features hint that at the heart of Britain’s imperial exports were the rule of law and the skills of the people. The frieze is supported by two beautifully carved figures, one holds a cornucopia and the other has laurel leaves to the front. The shaped back is supported with carved vines and fruit decoration that stand on a shaped plinth base. This is a wonderful piece that perfectly captures Victorian nationhood. It demonstrates pride in its imperial strength, the British people, and the rule of law. These are enjoined together in a culturally rich piece that depicts Britain as an ancient, cultured and educated nation.

This is a true piece of history.

It is available to view in our Suffolk showhouse by appointment.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the nineteenth century, a mirror back console table is a substantial piece of wall-mounted or free-standing furniture featuring a lower serving surface paired with a large integrated mirror frame. Popular in Victorian entryways and dining rooms, these items were created to reflect light and display decorative objects.

These tables were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut. Decorative elements often featured hand-carved relief work, bevelled mirror glass plates, and traditional hand-cut joinery such as mortise and tenon joints.

Authentic nineteenth-century Victorian mahogany pieces display natural wood grain variations, hand-carved details with subtle irregularities, and original brass or timber fittings. Inspecting the reverse and underside reveals hand-sawn timber marks and traditional cabinetmaking techniques rather than modern machine finishings.

Position the piece in a spacious hallway or formal dining room as a dominant focal point, balancing the intricate woodwork against plain painted walls. Minimalist accessories, such as plain ceramic vessels or understated contemporary lighting, help modernise the classical aesthetic without overwhelming the space.

Dust the carved surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to reach recessed details. Preserve the finish by applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding chemical sprays and keeping the wood away from direct heat sources and moisture.
