Italian Giltwood and Gesso Neo-classical Curule Stool.

19th century
For Sale by Earl and Rymer
Description

Italian giltwood and gesso neo-classical curule stool.

Featuring a scrolled x-frame with lion mask details, the legs are decorated with acanthus leaves and paw feet. Reupholstered in a textured white silk.

Some losses to the giltwood frame commensurate with age and wear.

Curule seats are a form of transportable chair noted for their use in Ancient Rome, they held status in early Rome as a symbol of political or military power.

The lion heads are a canonical Neo-classical motif, referencing Roman power, authority and virtue. They are typically used as terminations rather than independent sculptural elements.

The stools became popular again in the early 19th Century, when European furniture designers started to take inspiration from classical antiquity.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A curule stool, derived from the ancient Roman sella curulis, is an X-frame seat characterised by curved legs crossing at the centre, historically associated with status and classical authority.

Neoclassical giltwood seating consists of a carved timber frame coated with gessoa mixture of binder and chalkwhich is subsequently gilded using gold leaf and fitted with upholstery.

Authentic neoclassical curule seats display hand-carved motifs such as lion head terminals or paw feet, hand-applied gilding over a white gesso layer, and natural surface patination or oxidisation.

A giltwood curule stool functions as an architectural accent piece positioned at the foot of a bed, beneath a console table, or near a fireplace hearth to add historical structure.

Dust giltwood surfaces gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding liquids, damp cloths, or chemical solvents that risk dissolving gesso and lifting delicate gold leaf.
