A fine oil on canvas titled ‘Last of the stooks’ by Scottish artist Tom Robertson 1850-1947. The painting beautifully depicts in an impressionist manner a landscape at the beginning of Autumn with the last of the wheat stooks standing in a field as the leaves are beginning to fall from the trees. The work is signed and dated to the lower right 1888. Tom Robertson was born in Glasgow in 1850. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and in Paris under Benjamin Constant. On his return to Glasgow in the late 1880s he began to show in his studio and in the main London and provincial exhibitions, it is likely this work is a Scottish landscape from this time. In 1897 his painting ''Luna Sorgente'' was exhibited in Venice and was bought by the King of Italy. Robertson won a gold medal at the Nantes Exhibition in 1910 and the Musee des Beaux Arts bought ''The Morning Star'' in 1928.
