Type of artwork: Pen, ink and wash on laid paper
Surface: Antique Whatman Laid Paper
Artist and signature: Attributed to Edward Dayes (1763–1804)
A highly attractive and atmospheric Georgian landscape drawing depicting Lodore Falls near Derwentwater, one of the most celebrated picturesque subjects of the Lake District.
The work is executed in pen and ink with subtle wash, showing confident foliage work, strong recession of tone, and classical staffage figures — all characteristics associated with late 18th-century British picturesque draughtsmanship.
The reverse bears an old attribution to Edward Dayes, a noted British landscape artist of the Romantic period whose work influenced later figures including Turner. While the attribution cannot be guaranteed, the style, subject, period materials, and J Whatman paper are entirely consistent with Dayes or his immediate circle.
