Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pole screen is a standing hearth accessory featuring an adjustable panel mounted on a vertical rod with a weighted tripod base. Popular from the 18th through the late 19th century, its function was to shield seated individuals from the intense direct heat of an open fire and prevent face makeup from melting.

19th-century pole screens were typically constructed using gilded wood, carved mahogany, rosewood, or turned metal for the frame and central rod. The framed decorative panels frequently featured hand-stitched wool needlepoint, silk embroidery, or beaded tapestry work.

Authentic period pole screens exhibit hand-turned hardware, age-appropriate wear to the gilding, and original brass adjustment mechanisms along the central column. The reverse side of the textile panel often displays uneven hand stitching and less color fading compared to the exposed front side.

An antique pole screen serves as a decorative accent when positioned near a fireplace, placed within an empty alcove, or styled in a reading corner. Its slim vertical footprint adds height, historical texture, and visual interest to classic or eclectic room schemes.

Keep the screen situated away from direct sunlight, dampness, and active heat sources to prevent the wood from warping and the textiles from fading. Dust the gilded frame lightly using a soft, dry brush and avoid applying chemical polishes or liquid cleaning agents to the gilding and fabric.
