Very Fine Quality 18th-century Walnut Chest of Drawers with Sliding Top Panel

18th century
Description

A very fine quality 18th-century chest of drawers, raised on four bun feet. The piece features an unusual sliding top panel, constructed to withdraw in the manner of a drawer, allowing it to be used as an ironing surface at a time when separate ironing boards were not in common use. This practical and historically interesting feature makes the chest a particularly rare example of period furniture.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the early 18th century, walnut was the primary wood choice for fine English cabinet making, recognised for its figured veneers, feather banding, and balanced proportions.

Pieces from this period usually feature solid oak or pine carcases overlaid with figured walnut veneers, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and cast brass backplate handles.

Authentic period chests exhibit hand-sawn drawer linings, natural wood shrinkage around joint lines, hand-forged fittings, and original patinated brass hardware.

A period walnut chest functions well as a statement piece in a hallway, bedroom, or living space, contrasting effectively alongside clean contemporary artwork or minimal lighting.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and excessive sunlight to prevent veneer movement, dusting regularly with a dry cloth and waxing periodically with clear beeswax.
