Skippings Fine Arts has dated this 1930s Floral Oil Painting to the 1930s.
The work captures a bouquet of anemones in a rounded ceramic vase, set against an interior. Apol utilizes a bold, Fauvist palette—rich indigos, vibrant magentas, and deep violets—to give the flowers a sense of living energy.
Of particular note is the background's execution. Apol employs elements of Pointillism and "divisionist" brushwork in the upper register, creating a shimmering, fractured light that allows the domestic setting—a mantelpiece with a clock and framed art—to feel both tangible and dreamlike.
As a leading figure in the Belgian Luminist movement, Apol exhibited at the 16th, 17th and 18th annual exhibition at the Carnegie Centre in Pittsburgh.
Apol was obsessed with the "vibration" of light. In this piece, the light doesn't just hit the objects; it seems to emanate from the canvas itself.
