Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French gilt bronze hall lanterns traditionally feature ornate cast metal frames decorated with Rococo or Neoclassical elements such as scrollwork, foliate motifs, and shell details. Originating in 18th-century France, these lanterns enclosed candles or oil lamps within glass panes to prevent draughts while displaying decorative metal craftsmanship.

Period hall lanterns were constructed using cast bronze or brass, which was often gilded using mercury or fire-gilding techniques (ormolu) to achieve a bright gold finish. The surrounding enclosure utilised hand-blown or curved glass panels to shield the internal light source.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-chased metalwork with subtle variations in detail, visible tool marks, and cast construction joined with period-appropriate threaded screws or square nuts. The gilding typically displays uneven wear, particularly on raised surfaces, alongside natural oxidation in recessed areas.

A gilt bronze lantern serves as a focal point in entryways, stairwells, or high-ceilinged corridors. Pairing the warm metallic tones with muted wall paint schemes allows the intricate silhouette and glass reflections to complement both traditional and transitional interior schemes.

Gilt bronze should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a fine feather duster to prevent grime accumulation. Abrasive polishes, water, or chemical cleaners must be avoided, as they can strip or damage original gilded finishes and patina.
