‘Benlian’’ Tabriz Carpet, North-west Persia, Circa 1930, 3.93m X 2.98m

1920 - 1940
Description

The name of Benlian is associated with fine Tabriz carpets from the early 20th century. Edward Benlian was born in Constantinople and moved to England as a boy with his family in 1889 where he soon started work in his father's carpet business. Benlian took over the business and began to successfully produce carpets from Tabriz with reinterpretations of the classic Persian repertoire. His carpets were all signed with the famous Benilian star in the corner of the main border. These carpets proved to be very popular and remain in demand until today. Our lovely carpet is a great example. The fine quality materials are matched by the elegant classic design featuring a central anchor medallion surrounded my scrolling vines, mythical animals and lions hunting deer. The subtle tones are dominated by the ivory field and soft pink border, but include shades of pale blue, green and light brown which the carpet a light appearance. The composition is highly sophisticated and decorative, and would suit any space from a drawing room to a bedroom.. In excellent original condition, and professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Benlian Tabriz carpets are hand-knotted textiles produced in North-West Persia during the early 20th century under the supervision of Edward E. Benlian. Renowned for high knot density, structured weave, and elegant floral or classical medallion designs, these carpets frequently featured signature workshop branding, such as a woven star motif.

Tabriz carpets are traditionally constructed with a high-density hand-knotted wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. Weavers utilise symmetric knots, enabling precise architectural detailing, intricate arabesques, and intricate botanical patterns.

Authentic Benlian Tabriz carpets typically feature a signature eight-pointed star woven into one of the corners of the outer guard stripe or fringe area. Additionally, they display consistent weave structure, muted natural dye palettes, finely clipped wool pile, and classical central medallion compositions with floral or faunal motifs.

A large neutral-toned Persian carpet serves as a grounding anchor in contemporary living rooms or dining areas, balancing minimal modern furniture with historical texture. Placing the carpet beneath neutral sofa arrangements or a dark wood dining suite introduces warmth, acoustic dampening, and classic visual balance.

Regular maintenance involves gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater-bar to prevent fibre breakage and thread distortion. Professional specialist hand-washing is recommended for periodic deep cleaning, while using a quality underlay protects the cotton foundation from excessive friction and uneven wear.
