Royal Worcester Wind Maidens Porcelain Figures by James Hadley, C. 1865–1878

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A rare matched pair of Royal Worcester glazed Parian porcelain figures designed by James Hadley as the iconic “Before the Wind” and “Against the Wind” maidens. These sculptural figures embody Victorian movement through flowing drapery and expressive posture, marking a high point of Worcester figural art.

Hadley’s revolutionary modelling approach in the 1860s introduced natural motion and emotional presence into porcelain sculpture. The dramatic fabric folds and balanced composition of this pair are classic features of this artistic period.

Finished in an exceptionally rare pastel pink and rich green colour scheme, these figures represent a short-lived decorative experiment seldom found today. Gilt-rimmed marbled bases indicate superior decorative quality.

Early impressed Worcester factory marks without letter codes place production firmly within the earlier phase of Hadley’s work.

Highly expressive Hadley modelling combined with this unusually bold pastel colour scheme makes this pair considerably rarer and more collectible.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the 19th century, Royal Worcester porcelain figures often depicted classical, allegorical, or rustic subjects, sculpted by artists such as James Hadley during the Victorian era.

Victorian figurines were typically cast from soft-paste or bone china porcelain, hand-painted with overglaze enamel pigments, and finished with gilt accents before firing.

Authentic pieces feature stamped or impressed factory marks on the underside, often incorporating a circular printed mark with dots or Roman numerals indicating the date of manufacture, alongside hand-painted details.

Displaying a pair of porcelain figures on a mantelpiece, inside a glass cabinet, or upon a sideboard introduces historical ceramic craftsmanship to contemporary or traditional interiors.

Dust the figures gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical cleansers that may compromise overglaze enamelling or gilt highlights.
