Description

Impressive Italian polychrome maiolica charger in tin-glazed earthenware, decorated with the heroic scene of Horatius Cocles defending the bridge. The subject belongs to the Renaissance istoriato tradition formed in Urbino, the historical source of narrative ceramics featuring monumental battle and classical historical imagery.

During the late 19th century, this tradition was revived by workshops in Pesaro, where Italian makers returned to historicist painting and traditional glazing techniques. Large chargers such as this were created as decorative wall pieces and interior focal points. The style is closely associated with Pesaro workshops including Ceramica Molaroni and related manufactories.

The reverse bears a presentation label dated 1955 documenting later ownership and confirming its status as a valued decorative object.

Condition

The charger is in excellent overall antique condition. There are a few very small enamel chips along the rim and fine glaze crazing visible under UV light, confined to the glaze layer only and not affecting the ceramic body. The painted surface remains vibrant and well preserved.

Istoriato, meaning narrated or history-painted, is a style of Italian tin-glazed earthenware developed during the Renaissance. It features detailed narrative scenes depicting historical, classical, mythological, or biblical subjects painted across the entire surface of the ceramic piece.

Maiolica is created using fired earthenware clay coated with an opaque white tin glaze. Metal oxide pigmentssuch as cobalt for blue, copper for green, and antimony for yelloware painted directly onto the wet glaze before a second kiln firing fuses the pigments into the surface.

Authentic pieces from the 18901915 period demonstrate hand-painted brushwork using traditional oxide palettes, pinhole imperfections in the tin glaze, glaze crazing, and evidence of wear on the foot rim or hanging holes on the reverse.

A large maiolica charger can be mounted on a neutral accent wall using a secure plate hanger or displayed upright on a wooden plate stand atop a sideboard or mantlepiece to act as a architectural focal point.
