Large Continental Maiolica Chinoiserie Vase with Cover, C.1860–1880

Description

An impressive monumental continental maiolica vase and cover dating to the third quarter of the 19th century. Made in tin-glazed earthenware, the vase is conceived as a decorative sculptural object rather than a functional vessel. The surface is worked with a stippled ground and extensive applied relief depicting chinoiserie scenes with pagodas, garden landscapes, foliage and figural details. The decoration reflects a European interpretation of Chinese themes, typical of the period.

The vase is constructed from multiple separately modelled elements, with figures and architectural details applied after firing. Seated figures were originally positioned near both handles; one survives in damaged condition, while the others are missing. Further figural elements are integrated into architectural niches at the lower register. The domed cover is surmounted by a seated figure and fits into an octagonal mouth, reinforcing the architectural character of the piece.

Comparable examples are recorded in Christie’s archives, described as English majolica chinoiserie vases and covers dated circa 1860. English makers such as Mason’s also produced related sculptural stoneware vessels, demonstrating the wider European fascination with chinoiserie ceramics during the 19th century.
