Royal Dux Porcelain Figures of a Fisherman and Fisherwoman, Bohemia, C. 1918

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A fine and substantial pair of Royal Dux porcelain figures depicting a fisherman and a fisherwoman, produced in Bohemia around 1918. The figures are well proportioned and confidently modelled, forming a harmonious and visually balanced pair.

The decoration features softly graded polychrome enamels, giving the figures a calm, sculptural character. Details are enhanced with dead-matte gilding, applied sparingly to baskets and accessories. A delicate dusting of gold, visible only under magnification, adds subtle depth to the garments, a finish associated with Royal Dux models of higher quality.

Model numbers 1819 and 1820 are impressed to the bases, confirming the pairing. The female figure retains a clear pink triangular DPM factory mark, with the male example showing expected wear to the same mark. Both bases also carry an impressed “F” within a circle, likely the initials of the sculptor or modeler.

Dimensions:

Male figure: height 38 cm; width 12.8 cm; depth 13 cm; weight 1407 g.

Female figure: height 37 cm; width 22 cm; depth 13 cm; weight 1524 g.

Condition:

Excellent original condition. No restoration, repainting, or cracks. Colours remain vibrant. Minor wear to gilding on basket rims only. Delicate details fully intact. UV examination confirms originality.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Royal Dux porcelain produced in Duchcov, Bohemia, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries is known for its figurative subjects, neutral or muted matte glazes, soft pastel accents, and subtle gilt detailing, often crafted in Art Nouveau or rustic genre styles.

These figures were cast from porcelain clay or earthenware, fired at elevated temperatures, and hand-painted with matte or ivory glazes. Accent colors were applied along with liquid gold gilding before a final firing.

Authentic pieces usually feature an applied pink clay triangle mark bearing the brand name and an acorn symbol, alongside impressed shape numbers and artist codes stamped directly into the unglazed base.

Figurines can be displayed in modern settings by placing them on symmetrical mantelpieces, inside glass-fronted cabinets, or on open shelving units alongside minimalist modern literature and monochrome accents.

Dust figures regularly using a soft, dry microfibre brush. Avoid immersing porcelain with gilt elements in water or applying chemical abrasives, which can strip away delicate surface paint and gold leaf.
