Queen Boadicea, a Large 19th Century Bronze Sculpture of the Celtic Warrior

A large and highly decorative 19th century French bronze study of the British Celtic Iceni tribe, Queen Boadicea or Boudicca is portrayed standing, wearing a long flowing dress with her most impressive waist long wavy hair. She has one arm raised, holding a small sword in a victorious pose with her foot on a shield lost in battle from the Roman enemy. She was famous for rising with Celtic tribes to fight against the Romans, who had invaded and settled in Great Britain during this period. Often brutally treating the native Celts, including Boadicea herself, who was tortured after her husband King Prasutagus was killed in conflict with the Romans.

This fine bronze is beautifully sculptured and has fine detailing throughout with a most pleasing rich brown patina.
