French Carved Oak Caned Bergère Chair

1900 - 1920
Description

A finely modeled French bergère chair executed in richly patinated carved oak, displaying elegant Rococo Revival influence. The asymmetrical, serpentine crest rail flows into a gracefully contoured horseshoe-shaped back, fitted throughout with finely woven natural cane. The shaped arms descend in a continuous sweep to join the seat rail, reinforcing the chair’s fluid, sculptural profile.

The apron is deeply carved with floral and foliate motifs centered by a stylized blossom, echoed by carved decoration to the knees and lower legs. The cabriole legs terminate in subtly scrolled feet, lending lightness and movement to the form. The oak surface retains a warm, medium-to-dark brown finish with attractive age patina and visible grain.

The seat is fitted with a removable, shaped cushion upholstered in tan leather (or leatherette), button-tufted and tailored to the frame; the original caned seat remains intact beneath.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bergere is an enclosed armchair featuring a exposed wooden frame, originative from 18th-century France. These chairs often feature upholstered or caned sides and backrests, accompanied by a loose seat cushion.

Traditional French caned furniture utilizes solid hardwoods such as oak, beech, or walnut for the frame, paired with woven rattan cane for the back panels and natural leather or fabric for the seating.

Authentic Louis XV style seating is characterised by graceful cabriole legs, hand-carved floral cresting along the frame, serpentine seat rails, and traditional joinery techniques like mortise and tenon construction.

A French caned chair can be positioned as a standalone accent piece in a bedroom corner, styled alongside a contemporary desk, or integrated into an eclectic living room seating arrangement.

Keep the cane mesh periodically hydrated with slight humidity to prevent brittleness, avoid placement near direct heat sources, and apply a clear beeswax paste to the carved oak frame to preserve its patination.
