Description

A highly decorative pair of French late 19th century (circa 1900) spelter campana urns on stepped plinth bases.

The urns consist of a reeded edge to the top leading down to fluted decoration with ornate handles with male faces to either side all supported on a fluted stem with foliate collar.

The urns are supported on decorative stepped plinth bases, one depicting pan pipes within a roundel surrounded by stylised fleur de lys and the other depicting a lyre and artist palette surrounded by a laurel wreath.

This pair of urns are in good condition for age, are of stable construction and can go straight into a home – great items for a mantelpiece etc.

FAQs

A campana urn is a bell-shaped vessel derived from classical Greco-Roman pottery, characterised by a widely flared rim and inverted bell body. The form was widely adopted during the Renaissance and Neoclassical periods for architectural and interior decoration.

During the late 19th century, French foundries frequently used spelter, a zinc alloy, as an alternative to bronze. Spelter was cast into detailed moulds and treated with chemical patinas or lacquers to replicate the appearance of traditional patinated bronze.

Authentic period spelter items display crisp cast detailing alongside fine seam lines from multi-part mould casting. Unlike heavier cast bronze, spelter is lighter in weight, softer, and may show light greyish zinc where surface patination has worn away over time.

A pair of decorative urns can be placed symmetrically at either end of a fireplace mantelpiece or styled on a dining room sideboard. Their strong architectural profile also makes them suitable as bookends on deep shelving or flanking a central mirror.
