Description
A fine antique Victorian oil on canvas depicting a tranquil pool on the River Conwy, North Wales, painted during Thomas Spinks’ sought-after Welsh period. The composition is well balanced, with rugged boulders on the left bank and softer ground to the right, where mature trees and a small clearing create depth. Two grazing sheep add scale and a pleasing pastoral detail.
A warm golden-brown tree in the foreground anchors the scene against cooler greens and greys, while the river is painted with convincing movement and light. In the distance, hills and mountains recede gently beneat
...h an animated sky of white cloud and blue, with a gathering storm cloud adding atmosphere and drama typical of North Welsh weather.
About the Artist
Thomas Spinks was a recognised British landscape painter active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Recorded in London in 1880, he exhibited regularly between 1880 and 1907, including at the Royal Academy and notable venues such as the Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool) and Manchester Art Gallery. He moved to Bettws-y-Coed in 1889, and his Welsh river and mountain landscapes from this period are regarded as among his strongest and most collectible works.
Provenance and Labels
The reverse bears a Prestwich Fine Art label with handwritten details. Provenance is recorded as private collection from the vendor, Mitchells (Lake District auction house), and subsequently curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD. The original canvas retains a faint but legible maker’s stamp: “WINSOR & NEWTON / LONDON”, consistent with late 19th-century professional artists’ materials.
Condition Report
Offered in fine used condition. The painted surface is in good overall order. A repair has been carried out to the reverse of the canvas with corresponding touch-up to the paint surface in the repaired area. There is age-related craquelure and some foxing consistent with age. The gilt frame shows general wear including old repairs, chips, losses and surface scratches, commensurate with age and use.
