Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Victorian era, solid sterling silver boxes were crafted for personal items such as trinkets, snuff, or dressing table accessories. Engine turning, or guilloche, was a popular decorative technique involving precise mechanical engraving to create geometric patterns across the metal surface.

These containers were constructed from sterling silver, comprising 92.5 percent pure silver alloyed with copper for structural durability. Traditional construction features hand-fitted flush hinges, precision engine-turned engraving, and custom engraved crests or monograms.

Authenticity is determined by official British hallmarks stamped into the silver. Look for the lion passant indicating sterling quality, a town mark such as the Leopards Head for London, a specific date letter representing the year of assay, and a makers mark.

A silver box functions effectively as a refined accessory on an office desk, dressing table, or sideboard. It can be paired with dark wood furniture, leather-bound books, or contemporary glass accents to add historical texture and surface contrast.

Clean the surface regularly with a soft, dry cotton cloth to prevent dust accumulation. When oxidisation develops, apply a specialised silver polish with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips or abrasive materials that could erode fine engraving.
