To be found within the box (and included in the sale) are four items including a water colour and pencil sketch both signed E . Burney.
The box 58cm high x 50cm wide.
Provenance: Originally from Lambeth Palace which stands on the opposite bank of the River Thames from the Palace of Westminster, which has been the London residence of the Archbishops of Canterbury for almost 800 years.
Then through decent to the Burney family.
Charles Burney (1726-1814), the musicologist and author of A General History of Music an organist and harpsichordist living in London, who had eight children.
His first son James Burney (1750–1821) was an English explorer and writer who served as a rear-admiral and accompanied Captain James Cook on his last two voyages. He later wrote two books on naval voyages and a third on the game of whist.
His second son Charles Burney FRS (1757–1817) was an English writer and scholar, and a schoolmaster, clergyman, and chaplain to King George III. His son
..., Charles Parr Burney was an Anglican archdeacon in the middle of the nineteenth century and his grandson another Charles Burney was the Archdeacon of Kingston-upon-Thames from 1879 to 1904.
One of his daughter Frances Burney (1776–1828) also known as Fanny Burney and later Madame d''Arblay, was an English novelist, diarist and playwright. she held the post of ''Keeper of the Robes'' to Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, George III''s queen.
Another daughter Susanna Elizabeth Burney, was an English writer, whose letters are said to be ''the most important source on opera in the period''
