Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Oversized spectacle trade signs emerged during the nineteenth century as visual identifiers for optometrists and opticians. Due to varying literacy levels among the general public, shopkeepers relied on iconic, instantly recognisable three-dimensional symbols to advertise their trade outside high street premises.

Victorian and early twentieth-century trade signs were typically crafted from durable materials designed to withstand weather exposure, including cast iron, sheet metal, brass, zinc, and glass. High-end optician signs frequently featured coloured or mirrored glass inserts set within metal frames.

Authentic period trade signs exhibit natural wear patterns, genuine oxidisation or patina on metalwork, and evidence of historical mounting hardware. Construction techniques such as hand-soldered joints, cast metal components, and thick, hand-cut glass lenses further distinguish genuine period examples from modern reproductions.

An oversized trade sign serves as a focal point when mounted on a feature wall, hung above a sideboard, or displayed within a gallery wall arrangement. Incorporating industrial or commercial relics adds texture and historical narrative to modern, eclectic, or dark academia interior schemes.

Maintain the item by gently dusting it with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to avoid removing the natural aged patina. Avoid harsh chemical cleansers or abrasive polishes on the brass and use a lightly dampened cloth with water for glass care.
