Oil Painting of Water Lilies and Lily Pads and Flowers on a Lake from France Impressionist Painter Artist Impressionism C1900 to 1950 Possibly of Claude Monet Garden

1900 - 1920
Description

A charming and beautiful impressionist oil painting on board of water lily and lily pads and flowers on a pond or lake in a later frame.

Most likely painted in Normandy France C1900 to 1950 at the house of Claude Monet by an impressionist artist of Claude Monet’s circle. The water lilies and lily pads were a major factor of Monet’s garden and numerous famous artists would visit Claude Monet at his Normandy home and paint with him. This particular oil painting sketch has aged with patination, that could possibly be cleaned by a professional restorer if required. Although, its age is part of the paintings charm.

This oil painting on board is almost certainly an impressionist artists sketch for a later full oil on canvas in our opinion, which of course many impressionists, especially from France did in the 1900’s Impressionism era, including Claude Monet and Picasso etc

The gilded rococo frame was an obvious later addition, which doesn’t complement this beautiful impressionist oil painting sketch.

MEASUREMENTS OF OIL PAINTING ONLY:

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Impressionism emerged in the late 19th century, characterised by visible brushstrokes, open composition, and an emphasis on capturing the changing qualities of natural light and atmosphere.

Artworks from this period typically feature oil pigments applied to stretched linen canvas or wooden board, housed within carved timber or molded gesso frames finished with gold leaf or metallic gilding.

Authentic period paintings display natural craquelure across the paint layer, layered impasto technique, period-correct canvas weave, and signs of aged wood or oxidisation on the rear of the frame.

Position the framed artwork as a central focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard, pairing its rich tones with minimalist furniture or complementary classic mouldings.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, fluctuating humidity, and heat sources. Dust the frame gently with a soft dry brush, and consult a professional conservator for surface varnish restoration.
