Fine 17th oil on canvas portrait of a young lady in a blue silk dress painted in the oval by an artist in the circle of Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680)
 
This exquisite and insightful work, is a highly accomplished example of the type of portrait that was popular in court circles in the third quarter of 17th century England.
 
The as yet unknown sitter is extravagantly and expensively dressed in the height of fashion, a gem studded lustrous cornflower blue silk dress. It is festooned with pearls and diamonds, and falls away at her shoulders to reveal her décolletage, and create the delightfully deshabille look of the period.
 
We are left in no doubt as to this beauty’s status, she has ropes of pearls (the quintessential baroque ornament) prominently displayed and these held in place with table cut diamond brooches. A pearl necklace completes her look and her coiffure is pinned effortlessly upwards, with curls tumbling onto her shoulder. This loose treatment of the sitters hair display...
