Antique Russian Silver Enamel Cloisonne Spoons and Fork Set C.1890

19th century
For Sale by Artisan Antiques
Description

We are delighted to offer this beautiful set of four antique Imperial Russian solid silver enamel flatware, consisting of 3 spoons and 1 fork, all made c.1890.

The magnificent cloisonne-work, typical of fine 19th c. Russian silver enamelware, whilst intricate and splendid on every single piece, truly come to life when combined and with various types of motifs.

In spite of what could be a very bland and utilitarian item, each piece has been decorated and treated as an object of vertu to display a high degree of craftsmanship, artistry and design.

Such contrast and artistic juxtaposition between utility and ornamentation is particularly delightful on these pieces and serves as a wonderful aesthetic contrast in interior settings among other silverware or as a highlighting piece on a table. The colourful enamel and delicacy are almost jewel-like and would also gracefully complement jewellery collections.

The bowl and terminals have been gorgeously enamelled with a range of vivid colours, each immaculately filled in each 'cloison' (the compartment between the twist rope borders) shaped as various scrolls and foliate motifs. The stem of the spoons features a lovely writhen/twisted design.

Overall, the quality feel in hand, intricate silverwork and the colourful enamelling are delightful and make a splendid collectable and display of fine 19th c. Russian silverware.

All pieces are marked with Russian 84 hallmarks along with their various makers' marks.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Russian cloisonne silver involves an enamelling technique where thin metal wires are soldered to a silver base to form cells, which are then filled with coloured glass enamel powder and fired. This art form reached its peak popularity during the late Imperial period in Russia, predominantly between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These pieces were crafted using high-grade silver, often 84 zolotnik standard, combined with vitreous enamel paste. Artisans formed intricate filigree borders, twisted the silver handles, and carefully applied enamel into each cell before heat-firing and polishing the surface smooth.

Authentic items display official silver standard hallmark stamps, such as the 84 zolotnik mark, alongside city assay marks and maker initials. Genuine historical pieces also exhibit subtle variations in the hand-wrought wirework and traditional hand-applied vitreous enamelling.

Enamelled silver pieces can be displayed within a glass-topped velvet curio tray, arranged inside a dining room china cabinet, or mounted in a framed shadow box to highlight the intricate scrollwork.

Clean gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a lightly damp cloth with mild soap, avoiding immersion in water. Chemical silver cleaners and abrasive polishes must be avoided, as they can loosen or crack the vitreous enamel cell fillings.
