Antique Baluch Tribal Rug, Persian–Afghan Region, Early 20th Century

An early 20th-century Baluch tribal rug from the Persian–Afghan border region, handwoven in wool and dating to around 1920. The design features a compartmentalised field of bold geometric medallions and serrated tribal motifs, articulated by vertical indigo bands and enclosed within a series of finely patterned borders.

Woven with a wool pile on a wool foundation, this rug has a soft, supple handle and the strong graphic character typical of nomadic Baluch work. The lighter ground gives it a more open, decorative feel than many darker Baluch rugs, making it particularly effective in both traditional and contemporary interiors. Both ends retain their fringes and the sides their original selvages.

A characterful antique rug with warmth, individuality, and unmistakable tribal presence — well suited to a living space, bedroom, or study where texture and authenticity are more important than pristine condition.
