Pair of Mid 19th Century Swedish Carved Elm Chest of Drawers

19th century
Description

Fine quality pair of 19th century swedish carved elm commodes circa 1850.

Rectangular tops in book marked veneered elm, solid moulded edges and rounded corners which form the top of the candy twist hand carved columns which run down each side of the fronts of these chests. Each fitted with 3 drawers of equal proportions and a further shaped drawer on the bottom. Each drawer is fitted with an ornate ormolu handle which houses the keyhole as well. Working locks and key. Each standing on carved paw front feet and a block foot to the rear.

Rare to find a pair of chests of these proportions still together. Fully restored and re-polished by hand in our workshop. Slight difference in colour between the 2 chests, this is down to natural daylight fading which happens over years when pairs of items are located in different areas around the home. Natural shrinkage to 1 bottom drawer but still functions and locks.

Minor surface marks and fading to woodwork, ready for everyday use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-19th-century Swedish furniture often combines Biedermeier and Neoclassical influences, characterised by clean architectural lines, warm native wood veneers such as elm or birch, decorative column details, and carved support feet.

Cabinetmakers commonly utilized native Swedish hardwoods like elm, pine, and birch for visible exteriors, while softwoods such as pine were used for secondary internal structures, drawer linings, and back panels.

Authentic period chests typically feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, hand-sawn secondary timber on the back and undersides, period brass hardware with cast backplates, and natural surface patination around handles and feet.

A matching pair of chests can be placed flanking a fireplace, positioned as oversized bedside cabinets, or set along a hallway wall to create symmetry while adding natural wood tones to neutral contemporary interiors.

Maintain antique elm surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and applying a thin coat of natural beeswax polish annually. Keep timber away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying or discolouration.
