Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian ebonised low chair, frequently referred to as a nursing or slipper chair, is a low-seated armless chair popular during the late nineteenth century. These chairs featured dark stained or painted timber to imitate imported ebony and were designed for bedrooms or dressing areas.

These chairs were typically constructed from hardwoods such as beech, walnut, or birch, which were then treated with an ebonised finish. Upholstery utilised dense woven fabrics or tapestries, supported by wooden joinery, turned spindles, and ceramic or brass castors.

Authentic pieces feature turned wood details, hand-fitted joinery, original brass or ceramic castors, and natural surface wear where the dark ebonised stain has thinned over time to reveal the underlying wood grain.

Place the chair as an accent piece in a bedroom corner, dressing space, or hallway. The dark ebonised frame and textured upholstery provide high visual contrast when set against neutral walls or modern minimalist furniture.

Dust the timber elements regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical sprays that can degrade historic lacquers and stains. Clean textile panels with a gentle brush or low-suction vacuum attachment to prevent dust build-up.
