Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Camphor wood chests originated in Asia and became prominent export items during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The aromatic natural oils of the Cinnamomum camphora tree act as an effective moth and pest repellent, making these trunks ideal for storing woollens, silks, and household linens.

These pieces are predominantly constructed from solid camphor wood or lined with camphor timber behind decorative hardwood exteriors. They feature hand-carved relief work depicting landscapes or architectural motifs, alongside fitted brass latch plates and traditional hand-cut joinery.

Authentic Art Deco pieces display geometric structural elements, such as stepped end profiles or stylised border fretwork, combined with traditional hand-carved panels. Natural age-related wear to the brass hardware and smooth internal patination from decades of use also indicate authenticity.

A carved camphor chest functions as a statement piece when placed at the foot of a bed or used as a central coffee table in a living room. Combining dark timber carving with neutral upholstery creates texture and balance within contemporary schemes.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent the timber from drying or cracking, and avoid abrasive liquid cleaners on the brass fittings.
