For offer is a most attractive 18th Century Meissen Porcelain Figure of a Lady seated beside a Spinning Wheel. She is reclining in a high-backed chair with a book in her right hand. The scrolled base is applied with flowers.

Circa 1750

Blue crossed swords mark.

Height: 16cm

Width: 16 cm

Depth: 11 cm

Note. The model is after the engraving 'Les amusements de la vie privée' by Louis Surugue of 1747, after the painting by Chardin of 1746. The engraving was dedicated to Madame La Comtesse de Tessin.

in very good condition with only some very minor restoration to the back of the chair.

Established in 1710, the Meissen manufactory in Saxony was the first European producer of hard-paste porcelain. During the mid-18th century, master modeller Johann Joachim Kandler refined Rococo ceramic sculpture, producing detailed figures depicting pastoral scenes, courtly life, and allegorical subjects.

Antique figures were produced using hard-paste porcelain composed of kaolin and feldspathic rock. The liquid clay mixture was cast in plaster moulds, assembled by hand, fired at high temperatures, and subsequently painted with overglaze enamel pigments and gilt accents before a final firing.

Authentic pieces generally feature the iconic crossed swords mark painted underglaze in cobalt blue. Collectors also examine the characteristic weight of hard-paste porcelain, crisp detail in the hand-modelled elements, period press numbers, and expected age wear on the unglazed foot rim.
