Description
A highly atmospheric early 20th-century Scottish oil portrait on canvas, signed and dated 1914 by David Alison R.S.A. The painting depicts a young blonde girl seated in quiet concentration, absorbed in her book. A well-loved teddy bear rests beside her, adding warmth and narrative charm. The sitter’s calm expression and gentle outward gaze create a sense of stillness and contemplation, elevating the work from simple likeness to sensitive narrative portraiture.
Composition and Technique
This portrait is an excellent example of Alison’s accomplished tonal method. The figure is set against a cool, softly modulated ground of greys with muted blue notes, creating depth and atmosphere while allowing the child’s face and dress to read with clarity.
The white dress is carefully modelled with warm creams and silvery shadow, giving the fabric weight and realism rather than r...elying on flat highlights. A deep crimson sash and trim introduce a confident accent of colour, adding warmth and visual rhythm while drawing the eye back toward the sitter’s face. Her hair is painted with luminous ivory and honeyed tones, catching the light delicately, while the flesh tones—rose, peach, and pale pink—are layered with notable sensitivity for a lifelike softness.

About the Artist: David Alison R.S.A. (1882–1955)
David Alison was a respected Scottish portrait painter known for disciplined draftsmanship, tonal control, and traditional portrait values. Born in Dysart, Fife, he studied at the Glasgow School of Art and later travelled on the Continent, absorbing Old Master influences that remained evident throughout his career—particularly in structure, tonal modelling, and psychological presence.
In 1913, he became Head of Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art, placing him at the heart of Scottish academic art training. He served in the First World War and was wounded at Gallipoli in 1915, an experience that affected his health thereafter. Elected Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1916, he later became a full Royal Scottish Academician and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, London, and the Royal Scottish Academy. His portraits—especially early, dated works—remain desirable to collectors of Scottish art and traditional portraiture.

Dated 1914, this portrait was painted at the end of the Edwardian era, just before the First World War. It captures a poignant moment of domestic calm and childhood innocence immediately prior to major social change, adding period interest and collectible resonance.
