For Sale by Youngs Antiques
Description

A 16th century flamboyant gothic carved oak cupboard circa 1500, possibly German or Flandres.

The cupboard consists of two small cupboards over two drawers and a larger bottom cupboard. All of the doors have working iron sliding locks complete with a key. The whole front fascade of the cupboard is heavily decorated with flamboyant gothic carving, flamboyant taken from the French meaning of ''flaming'' ,which refers to a style of late gothic architecture seen in the whole of europe from the late 14th century to the mid 16th century.

The three doors and the four vented fret-work panels are decorated with helmets and shields, between the top two doors is a gothic niche with a boxwood saint, which is possibly saint barbara the patron saint of armourers.

The interior of the cupboard has a shelved interior, all of the shelver are removable.

The cupboard does have later restorations and alterations which is to be expected with pieces of this age.

Overall the cupboard is in fantastic condition and has a lovely colour with a superb patina.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Flamboyant Gothic furniture from the 16th century is identified by its intricate, flame-like carved tracery, pointed arches, and architectural elements derived from late medieval ecclesiastical design.

These cupboards were predominantly crafted from solid oak using hand-planed mortise and tenon joinery, secured with wooden pegs, and fitted with hand-forged wrought iron hinges and lockplates.

Authenticity is indicated by signs of hand-tooling such as adze marks, uneven pegged construction, natural shrinkage along the wood grain, and genuine age-related oxidisation around iron hardware.

A heavily carved Gothic piece serves as a focal point in neutral, contemporary spaces, pairing well with understated stone flooring, plaster walls, and minimalist textiles to highlight its structural details.

Dust the intricate carvings regularly with a soft bristle brush and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the timber patina and protect against moisture loss.
