Pair of C1920's Louis Xvi Style Gilt Armchairs

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautiful and elegant pair of antique or vintage French-style armchairs (fauteuils), offering a perfect blend of classic continental design and vibrant, contemporary upholstery.

The frames are in the traditional Louis XVI style, evident in their refined neoclassical features, such as the straight, fluted, column-like legs and symmetrical lines. The wood frame has a painted finish, which adds a charming, aged appeal.

The chairs have been recently and professionally reupholstered in high-end designer Penny Morrison Killi Pink 100% linen fabric. The bold, three-colour vertical pattern provides a stunning, modern contrast to the vintage frames.

Style: Louis XVI, Neoclassical

Material: Painted Wood Frame, 100% Linen Upholstery

Colour: Pink and White fabric, painted frame

Condition: Excellent vintage condition; newly upholstered.

Origin: Likely French, but the style was widely produced in other European countries

This pair is of high quality, featuring traditional upholstery methods (likely hand-tied springs and natural stuffing), suggesting they were crafted in the late 19th or early 20th century. This robust construction ensures their lasting durability and authentic character.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century France and reproduced during subsequent revivals, these chairs feature carved wooden frames finished with gold leaf gilding, open padded arms known as manchettes, and upholstered backrests.

Frames were carved from hardwoods such as beech, coated with a gesso base, and finished with gold leaf gilding before receiving traditional webbed seat construction and decorative upholstery fabric.

Look for visible clay bole under worn gilded areas, carved details on the crest rail and seat frame, and traditional joinery techniques appropriate to early 20th-century cabinetmaking.

Place the pair opposite a contemporary sofa or adjacent to a fireplace to establish visual contrast between classical decorative carving and clean modern architectural lines.

Dust gilded surfaces using a dry camel-hair brush to prevent damage to the gold leaf and gesso, while vacuuming the upholstery gently using a low-suction soft brush attachment.
