Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bakelite is a synthetic phenolic resin invented by Leo Baekeland in 1907. It became widely popular in costume jewellery manufacturing during the 1920s and 1930s, defined by its moldable nature, rich colour palette, and distinctive weight.

These strands were crafted from phenol formaldehyde resin, often tinted in deep cherry red, amber, or tortoiseshell shades. The beads were hand-polished or tumbled, then threaded onto silk, cotton, or metal wire chains in graduated sizes.

Authentic Bakelite lacks surface mould seams and produces a distinctive heavy clacking sound when beads touch. When subjected to friction or warm water, original Bakelite releases a subtle formaldehyde odour, and Simichrome polish turns yellow upon contact with unlacquered surfaces.

Bakelite necklaces can be displayed in shadow boxes, arranged inside velvet-lined glazed frames, or laid across stone trays on a dressing table as decorative accents.

Keep Bakelite away from direct sunlight, high heat, and harsh chemical cleaners to prevent surface oxidisation and discolouration. Clean gently with a soft dry cloth, and store flat to prevent the internal stringing cord from stretching.
