Tall 19th Century Decorated Eastern Lacquered Tapering Vase 35.3cm

19th century
Description

19th Century Tall Decorated Eastern Lacquered Tapering Vase

A highly decorative nineteenth-century Eastern lacquered tapering vase on a turned base, beautifully enriched with inlaid and sgraffito decoration covering the entire body, which almost sparkles when hit by light. The craftsmanship is enhanced by a rich red lacquered stem and lower cupped bowl mounted upon the turned stem, creating a striking contrast with the exterior decoration.

The vase/ornament, which may have once had a small lid/cover, stands on a pedestal foot, giving the piece added presence and elegance.

Condition:

There are minor losses in places, consistent with age and use, but these do not detract from the overall decorative appeal.

Dimensions:

Height: 35.3 cm

Diameter: 8 cm

Notes:

A visually striking and characterful example of nineteenth-century Eastern lacquerware. We are also offering a vase with very similar decoration in a separate listing—please look out for it.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Eastern lacquerware involves applying resinous sap in multiple thin layers over a turned wood or papier-mache core, producing a durable finish often embellished with incised or painted detail.

These pieces were typically turned on a lathe from hardwood, layered with natural lacquer, polished, and intricately decorated using mineral pigments, gilding, or fine engraving.

Authentic period pieces feature subtle hand-crafted variations, subtle wear to raised rim edges and bases, and a smooth, mellowed patina that synthetic varnishes cannot recreate.

Position the vase on a console table or sideboard as a sculptural feature, allowing its dark tones to contrast against neutral walls alongside warm metallic accents.

Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth and keep the object away from direct sunlight, radiators, and excess humidity to protect the lacquer coating from cracking.
