Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pate-sur-pate, meaning paste-on-paste in French, is a ceramic decoration method where liquid clay slip is built up in successive translucent layers to create a relief design on an unglazed or glazed ceramic surface. Developed at Sevres in France during the mid-19th century, it was subsequently adopted and refined by prominent English ceramic manufactories during the Victorian period.

These vessels are typically crafted from fine porcelain or refined white earthenware. White clay slip is painted or molded onto the body of the jug prior to firing, creating raised cameo-like figures against a colored background glaze such as pink, green, or blue.

Authentic pieces generally display precise mold details, subtle translucency in the applied slip layers, and factory marks or impressed numbers on the underside. Microscopic age wear around the unglazed foot ring and base rim is also consistent with original mid-to-late 19th-century manufacture.

A relief-decorated porcelain pitcher functions effectively as a standalone decorative accent on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or inside a glass display cabinet. It pairs well with both traditional antique furniture and clean contemporary backdrops where its intricate detail can serve as a focal point.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild dishwashing detergent applied with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh chemical solutions, and automated dishwashers, and always support the base of the item directly when moving rather than lifting solely by the handle.
