Ningshia Pillar Rug, Northern Chinese, Mid-19th Century, 1.62m X 0.72m

Description

Despite some loss to the top end, this lovely pillar rug is superb. The fearsome dragon floats among the clouds above the architectural images at the lower end. The dragon is beautifully drawn as are all the other images. All the colours are spot-on, and date it to the mid-19th century or earlier. Corrosion in the browns gives a lovely three-dimensional texture. It is a delightful piece which would work equally well on a floor or wall.

A Ningxia pillar rug is a specialised hand-knotted Chinese carpet crafted to wrap around architectural wooden columns in Buddhist temples and official halls.
