Ningshia Pillar Rug, Northern Chinese, Mid-19th Century, 1.62m X 0.72m

19th century
Description

Despite some loss to the top end, this lovely pillar rug is superb. The fearsome dragon floats among the clouds above the architectural images at the lower end. The dragon is beautifully drawn as are all the other images. All the colours are spot-on, and date it to the mid-19th century or earlier. Corrosion in the browns gives a lovely three-dimensional texture. It is a delightful piece which would work equally well on a floor or wall.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Ningxia pillar rug is a specialised hand-knotted Chinese carpet crafted to wrap around architectural wooden columns in Buddhist temples and official halls. Designed with asymmetrical patterns, the weave aligns when wrapped to complete a continuous pictorial image, typically featuring dragons, clouds, and cosmic symbols.

19th-century Chinese rugs were typically woven with hand-spun native wool pile tied onto a cotton warp and weft foundation using asymmetrical SENNEH knots. Dyes were derived from natural organic sources, such as indigo for blues, madder for reds, and plant pigments or rhubarb for yellows.

Authentic 19th-century Ningxia rugs feature soft, coarse wool, a relaxed weave with lower knot counts compared to Persian examples, and distinct natural vegetable dye variations known as abrash. The structural weave frequently uses cotton warps, and the colour palette heavily relies on shades of yellow, tan, blue, and white.

Due to their long, narrow proportions, pillar rugs are frequently mounted and displayed vertically as wall art or textile hangings in entryways, staircases, and study spaces. Their bold graphic motifs complement minimalist modern decor, traditional gallery walls, and eclectic interiors.

Antique wool textiles should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent natural dye fading and stored in climate-controlled environments with stable humidity. Cleaning should be performed by specialist conservators, avoiding harsh chemicals, moisture exposure, or high-suction vacuuming.
