Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Italian altar candlesticks were functional ecclesiastical objects crafted for religious spaces during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. Designed with substantial height and architectural bases, these candle holders elevated light sources above church altars to enhance visibility during liturgy.

These pieces were typically carved from lightweight hardwoods, sealed with multiple layers of gesso preparation, and finished with silver leaf or argentone. A protective varnish or lacquer was often applied over the silver leaf to prevent rapid oxidisation and achieve a warm metallic lustre.

Authentic period examples demonstrate signs of hand-tooling, carved joint construction, and natural wear patterns where the underlying red or grey bole and timber show through the gesso. Original pricket spikes or converted brass nozzles at the top section also indicate traditional utility.

A paired set of tall altar candlesticks provides vertical proportion when placed at opposite ends of a large sideboard, console table, or wide fireplace mantelpiece. The textured, patinated finish creates visual contrast when set against smooth modern plaster walls or dark timber joinery.

Preservation requires dry, stable humidity levels to avoid cracking the gesso layer. Dusting should be performed gently with a soft microfibre cloth or pony hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, polishes, or abrasive materials that could strip the delicate silver leaf.
