Pair of 19th Century Paris Porcelain Figures, Letu & Mauger

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A high-quality pair of French porcelain figures made in Paris circa 1860 by Letu & Mauger. The figures depict a gallant and a young lady in stylised 18th-century costume and are arranged as a romantic genre composition with coordinated gestures and a theatrical presence. Finished in polychrome porcelain with restrained gilding and a bisque-like matt surface, each figure is mounted on a naturalistic base and a separate black plinth with gilt ornament. The impressed “L & M” marks are present to the bases.

The scale and finish give the pair a clear decorative impact. Such pieces were intended for prominent display in 19th-century interiors.

Dimensions:

Female figure: height 31.5 cm; width 14 cm; depth 14 cm; weight 1472 g.

Male figure: height 31.8 cm; width 14 cm; depth 13.5 cm; weight 1454 g.

Condition:

Overall excellent antique condition. The female figure shows a few very small, unobtrusive firing cracks (approx. 2 mm), inherent to manufacture. The male figure has a small loss to the hat at his feet and a minor chip to the back of the jabot collar; otherwise in very good condition. No restorations; clean under UV light.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Paris porcelain, often referred to as Vieux Paris, denotes hard-paste porcelain crafted by independent artisan workshops in and around Paris from the late 18th century through the 19th century. Known for intricate hand-painting, rich gilding, and expressive figurative subjects, these ceramics catered to European nobility and affluent middle-class interiors.

These figures were typically slip-cast or moulded from hard-paste porcelain, composed of kaolin, feldspar, and quartz. Following an initial firing, intricate details were hand-painted using overglaze polychrome enamels and burnished liquid gold before undergoing low-temperature kiln firings.

Authentic pieces exhibit fine hard-paste bodies, detailed hand-painted enamel, and characteristic mid-to-late 19th-century moulding traits or maker marks. Unlike factory-standardised porcelain, variations in glaze application, gilding wear, and specific maker signatures, such as Letu & Mauger, assist in authentication.

Displaying porcelain figurines as a pair on a symmetrical mantelpiece, console table, or within a glass display cabinet creates a defined focal point. Positioning them alongside minimalist contemporary ceramics or structured brass accents highlights their detailed forms.

Dust the figures regularly using a soft, dry synthetic brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners on gilded or overglaze painted areas. Immersion in water or the use of abrasive chemical detergents should be avoided, as this can degrade delicate surface gilding and enamel details.
