Historical Context
In 1925, Mrs Elizabeth Graydon-Stannus established a glass studio at 69–71 High Street, Battersea, London, with full-scale production beginning in early 1926 and a workforce of around twelve. The studio fostered a highly independent creative environment in which artisans were encouraged to design their own works and contribute new ideas. Committed to artistic originality, M
...rs Graydon-Stannus required all glass to be handmade and rejected mechanical assistance, which she dismissed as “the enemy of individuality.” This philosophy was summed up in her advertising slogan: “Gray-Stan does not copy, it creates.”
