Unusual Sindh Embroidered Shawl, Pakistan, Circa 1880, 2.10m X 1.24m

19th century
Description

This wonderful textile is embroidered with fine silk in shades of fuchsia and grey. The field design is composed of repeating demi-lunes or half-moons, a potent symbol of transition between light and dark or perhaps between potential and growth. Note too the delightful rows of shrubs in the side panels, and the little baubles added to the embroidery in places. Remarkably, this piece has survived in excellent condition. One can imagine it being used as a shawl, as wall art or as an exciting decorative furnishing. Professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A traditional Sindh embroidered shawl is a hand-stitched textile originating from the Sindh region of historical India and Pakistan, renowned for dense silk thread embroidery on woven cotton grounds.

These textiles typically feature a hand-spun cotton foundation decorated with silk floss stitching, using surface darning and satin stitches to create geometric, architectural, or floral motifs.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural dye variations, irregular hand-spun ground fabric, hand-bound edges, and traditional tassel details along with minor historical surface patination.

These versatile pieces can be displayed as mounted wall art, folded across the foot of a bed, or draped over furniture to add texture and historical character to modern spaces.

Textiles should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity, cleaned only by professional conservators using dry methods, and displayed without tension on delicate fibres.
