Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late 19th century, ceramic manufactories in the Turn-Teplitz region of Bohemia, including workshops directed by Ernst Wahliss, produced decorative terracotta and porcelain sculptures. These works frequently featured mythological scenes, classical allegories, and intricate figurative compositions that gained international acclaim during the Art Nouveau and Neoclassical periods.

These figurative groups were crafted from fine-grained terracotta or soft-paste porcelain clay. They were typically finished with cold-painted polychrome pigments, ivory-toned glazes, and parcel-gilded accents applied to accentuate structural details and drapery.

Authentic pieces generally feature impressed factory marks, such as the crown and depiction of Turn-Teplitz, along with impressed mold numbers and artist initials on the underside of the base. The presence of soft matte finishes, delicate facial modelling, and refined gilding also characteristic of original production.

A large figural sculpture serves effectively as a central focal point on a dark wood sideboard, marble fireplace mantelpiece, or within an illuminated glass display cabinet. Placing the object against a neutral wall allows the detailed silhouette and subtle colour tones to stand out.

Dust the item regularly using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths which can damage cold-painted finishes and original gilding. Keep the sculpture in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
