Rare French Art Deco (ca. 1925) Pair Of Bronze/marble Pelican Bookends, Max Le Verrier

Superb French Art Deco (ca. 1920) pair of pelican bronze and marble bookends by Max Le Verrier (1891-1973). This is the first Art Deco style sculpture that Max le Verrier made in Paris after returning from the war (Worl War I, during which he served as a pilot) and study in Switzerland in 1919. The success of this sculpture led to the foundation of his workshop, where he created, cast and sold his sculptures. Signed ‘ARTUS’. 12cm high x 8cm wide x 10cm deep, weight 3.3kg (pair).

Louis Octave Maxime Le Verrier (1891-1973) was a French sculptor who known more commonly as Max Le Verrier, but was also known by the pseudonym Artus (1891–1973). After graduation from the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Geneva in 1919 – where he studied under Marcel Bouraine and Pierre Le Faguays – Le Verrier returned to France, rented a workshop and founded his studio in Paris in the Rue du Théâtre, where he devoted his life to sculpture.
