A fine and unusual 19th century mahogany collector’s cabinet, fitted with twenty-four shallow drawers, originally designed for the storage and display of natural history specimens.
The cabinet retains a substantial part collection of butterflies, moths and other insects, arranged within 23 of the 24 drawers, many with original handwritten identification labels. The specimens appear to be of late 19th to early 20th century date and reflect the period fascination with entomology and scientific collecting.
Constructed in solid mahogany with a simple moulded cornice and plinth base, the cabinet has glazed drawers and door. One drawer has cracked glass, consistent with age and use, while the remaining drawers retain their glazing.
An evocative and atmospheric piece, suitable for a collector, interior decorator, museum display, or as a striking statement piece in a library or study.
